The Pitcairn Islands



The Pitcairn Islands have been one of the most deserted places on Earth. Four islands about the size of Washington D.C. Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno are the islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Pitcairn is about 2 miles long and 1 mile in width and is the only island with people living on it. Not only is Pitcairn so small, but is populated with fewer people than you think. You might think about five to 10 thousand. What if I told you it was populated with only around 50 people. Would you believe me, because I doubt it? I know it's crazy but it's also true. The Pitcairn Island is the lowest populated country in the world.
    Pitcairn Island was discovered in 1767 by the British and started to settle in 1790 by the Bounand mutineers. Adamstown was first set foot on and is now the capital of The Pitcairn Island. The Pitcairn Island was the first Pacific island to become a British colony. Out migration, primarily to New Zealand, has thinned the population from a peak of 233 in 1937 to less than 50 today.  The name Pitcairn came from a ship man Robert Pitcairn, a fifteen-year-old crew member who was the first to sight the island.
    The first leader of Pitcairn Island was named Fletcher Christian, the leader of the Bounty Mutineers. As he was a powerful leader he died at the age of 28. Right now Mike Warren is the President of Pitcairn since 2007. Even though was a great mayor, he taken out of office for illegal reasons.
The  Pitcairn Island is in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean and about 2 miles long. Since the islands are so small the only way to access them is by boat through the Bounty Bay. Pitcairn is the second largest of all four islands. Pitcairn's latitude is 25.04 south, and 130.06 west, and its highest altitude is 347 meters at the Pawala Valley Ridge, which is the only mountain on Pitcairn. Pitcairn is roughly 1350 miles south-east of Tahiti and just over 4100 miles from Panama.
Unlike most of the United States or larger countries, The Pitcairn Islands are nice and warm all year long. The weather is usually from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit all year round. Also, there are two main seasons of Pitcairn, Rain and no rain. These are not the actual season names, but other than rain, its the same all year round. Rain only falls from November to March, and no rain falls from April to October. 
 The Pitcairn Islanders speak the language Pitkern, and very little English. Pitkern is a Creole based language from the 18th century combining English and Tahitian. Like the Pitcairn Islands, very few people know this language. Since the island is so small, there is only one school that kids can attend. At this school they teach normal classes and learn English. The religion of Pitcairn is very important to their culture. On the island, there is a Seventh~Day Adventist church that many people attend daily. The church was built in the 1954's. The church still stands the same as the day was built. The currency of the island is New Zealand money.
    The Pitcairn Island flag is also a very vital piece of their history.  The flag was adopted on April 2nd, 1984. The design represents the ancestral history of the islanders, most of whom are descended from the sailors who mutinied on the bounty in 1789. The flag itself is a Blue Ensign with the Union Flag in the Canton and the coat of arms in the Pitcairn islands in the fly. The arms feature the anchor and bible from HMS Bounty with a slip of Miro (A local plant).
  Even if an island is in the center of an ocean, it doesn't mean it's as boring as a snail. The islanders there have everyday markets and other buildings needed to build a community. Pitcairn has only one small school for grades Kindergarten to 12th. The school teaches English and is run with the New Zealand syllabus. Also, the island holds a museum with all its islands greatest artifacts. A Government Hostel or 'The Lodge', are in the middle of Pitcairn for any needs necessary. The Lodge is used for up to eight people to live in for a period of time if necessary, but have to supply their own food. The other half of the building is used for Government meetings and Government related visitors. The General store for the island is actually in New Zealand. Items are bought in New Zealand and shipped over to the Island. With the island being fun size, only motorcycles and bikes are used there. There are no plane landing strips or airports. Usually bikes are rented to roam around the island. Many of the houses they live in are small one to two story buildings. Each house will have one telephone line and internet used only through the day, not night.
    Since the Islanders of Pitcairn have no place to play sports in a stadium or court, they often use the resources they've got. They'll play sports like football and soccer. Also boating, fishing, swimming, and rock climbing are common as well. When boating, the only launch to get in or out of is the Bounty Bay. Lots of the tourist’s boats use this launch to safely transport the passengers from one destination to the next.

Optical Microscopes

Author's Note: Nate had told me how to use an optical microscope  and I wanted write a essay on what a optical mircoscope is and what it does. In this essay I'm working on organization between paragraphs. I would also like to have exquisite word choice in my vocabulary.

Optical microscopes are a very important tool because they are very easy to handle and can be used doctors biologists, and scientists. These devices benefit people to study or analyze new objects and creatures all around the world.

The history of the optical microscope goes back to the early 1500's. The microscope was made in Middleberg, Netherlands. The first microscope was an optical microscope, these kinds of microscopes have 1 or more lenses that enlarges an object. The original name of the microscope was named "occhiolino" or "little eye",  from Galileo. In 1625 the name was then changed to "Microscope" by Giovanni Faber. Optical microscopes are the most common type of microscope.

The directions to use an optical microscope are very simple and easy to learn.  The optical microscope has two lenses to enlarge the object in a light. In a optical microscope the glass is refractive and is usually made out of plastic or quartz. To use an optical microscope you must have a glass or plastic slide with an object placed on its base. There should be one or two eyepieces that you are able to look through on top of the microscope. If you are not able to see the object you placed on the slide you can use the focus wheels on the side of the microscope to change the clearness of it. The focus wheels will change the distance on the lenses between the lenses and the object to make the object look clear. Depending on the object you want to look at may depend on the turret's place and size. The turret of the microscope is the microscope's eye basically, it is what you look through to see the object closer up. These are the few simple steps to working and using a microscope correctly. So if you are trying to find a item that cannot be seen by the human eye use a microscope.

Lots of different work places benefit from the microscope such as doctors and biologists. If a doctor wanted to look at a patients body for any diseases, viruses, or bacteria they would use a microscope. Doctors use very small microscopes to target cells and specimens so it's easier to pin point the disease or bacteria and diagnose the patient easier and more efficiently. Many geologists will also use microscopes to find new creatures and life forms too. When biologists studies the sea, they are able to look at any climate changes just by looking at organisms living in the ocean that can only be seen by a microscope. Also, many new animals  have been found by using microscopes underwater.
 
Lots of people and jobs need these helpful tools to find some amazing discoveries like a new animal or organism. Microscopes can let you see stuff from a whole new perspective of life. With the microscope you  are able to see stuff you didn't even know existed. So next time you come across a bug or artifact that you have no idea about, use an optical microscope to explore the life of being as small as a dot.

Operation Snowman

              The snowman is one of the most famous snow sculptures known to man. With the snowman's unique shape and appealing look. Anyone could make a snowman while having a bundle of fun. Although the snowman is an amazing sight, what is behind this snow sculpture? I mean does anyone really know much more about the snowman besides the fact that it looks like a person.  When was the first snowman ever made? What else can you make out of snow? These are just a few facts that may be very interesting to some .
            The first snowman was actually never recorded. However, in a book by Bob Eckstein named 'The History Of The Snowman'. Bob had done research and found a picture from the Medieval Times that has a bunch of children surrounding a snowman. With this picture you can say that the first snowman was made around the 1000th year or so.
            The tallest snowman in the world was made in Bethel, Maine in 1999. It is 113 ft. 7in. And is over 9,000,000 lbs. The snowman was named Angus, King of the Mountain. The tallest snow women world was made in 2008, also in 
  • Bethel, Maine. This snow woman is 122 ft.  1 inches in height. It is named after Olympia Snowe, the senior Republican  U.S. Senator representing Maine. This snow women's eyelashes were made out of skis and the eyes and buttons were made out of car tires. Its arms are giant pine trees and wears a huge red hat on its head. It then melted in July of 2008.
               There are more sculptures besides the snowman and snow women that kids will make. Some include animals like dogs, rabbits, and fish. You can also make snowmen out of paper, stone, stuffed toys, and even desert snowmen made out of sticks and branches. People will also dress up as snowmen in parades, and holiday celebrations.
                 Snowmen are made throughout the world every day. They bring a smile to people faces, and a joy to man kind. A  snowman can be a friend in your backyard, or a colossal giant that breaks world records. The next time your bored and sick of the indoors, run outside and make a snowman. They are as  easy as one, two, three, snowballs that is.

Global Warming

This certain topic has fascinated scientists for the past several years, and many questions have been asked about it. Some think it's a myth. Others call it the end of the world. Well I call it Global Warming. If you don't know what Global Warming is, it's when the average temperature and ocean level raise higher and higher every year from green house gases. Global Warming could be either a myth or a world stopper. Now I have seen how it is a very dangerous and serious topic to touch on, but  Global Warming is true and it needs to stop now. Global warming has been happening over the last hundred years or so, but has placed sky rocketing results in the last 20 years. The average temperature has rose 1.4 F. in the last 100 years. 1.4 degrees may not sound like much but it isn't normal and that's what is killing our natural resources. There are many different reasons why the Earth is heating up, but all these factors fall into the category of Greenhouse Gases.

A Greenhouse Gas is a gas in the atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range. The biggest Greenhouse Gases in our atmosphere are water vapor, Carbon Dioxide, Ozone, Methane, Nitrous, and Oxide.  Since the industrial industries had started the Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere went from 280ppm (Parts Per Million) to 390ppm. This is the highest ppm in the air known to geologists. With all these Greenhouse Gases in the air there and the average temperature rising, many things are going wrong in our natural world.

Global Warming has made some big things happen in the past years such as ice caps melting and water levels rising. Many Polar Bears are losing their homes and lives because the temperature in the air is rising. When the temperature is rising the glaciers begin to melt and the water starts to raise in height and temperature. The Polar Bear then have no where to live and the population is starting to die down rapidly.Wildlife in the Artic is also dying from ice melting and temperatures rising in the ocean. Many tropical islands and low land areas such as New Orleans and Florida have water rising. When water rises many houses near the shore of the ocean will get flooded.On islands animals and plants start to die from flooding and food begin to rot and become no good. The resources start to disappear and soon are gone. These resources include fruits, berries, and other foods that aren't in the U.S. The Ocean is also in danger. Since the Ocean is warming up Algae is dying from Global Warming. When Algae starts to die other animals that live off of Algae start to die. When these little things start to die it starts a chain reaction and soon decreased population in the ocean occurs. When Algae dies the animal that eats it will also start to die. This chain reaction could affect us when there aren't many fish for us to eat. Even though you may think a couple of animals are dying it's still a big deal. These animals are dying from Greenhouse Gases in the air.
Although Global Warming is happening right now, is a cycle happening? We have trashed or environment and oceans, but is there a cycle happening between Global Warming and Global Cooling. Global Cooling is when the Earth's surface gets colder than the average temperature. A cycle between Global Warming and Global Cooling switches every 30 years. From 1975 to 2001 was Global Warming. So we are now entering the Global Cooling part of the cycle. With all these Greenhouse Gases in the air and the temperature rising. When Global Cooling happens, the temperature will lower so much it may trigger a small ice age. This will happen because the magnetic fields of the sunspots from the are beginning to disappear from Greenhouse Gases. Also, the sun is starting to stop making sun spots. By 2015, the sun may not create any more sun spots and the Earth could have a little ice age. This ice age could last for up to 1 century.

An ice age is a terrible part of the world which would make the Earth get so much cooler. We can't stop this ice age because it is part of Global Warming, but we can try to prevent it as much as possible. Lots of the Carbon Dioxide in the air is from humans doing their daily life. Much of our life is revolving around electricity and fossil fuels. All these gases affect our environment. To stop polluting our environment, here are some ways to reduce Greenhouse Gases. Always shut off lights, electronics, and unplug devices when they are not in use. Try to recycle in your house like I do as much as often. Plant a tree. Put a cover over pots while cooking. These are just a few of the millions of ways to stop Global Warming. We all know the world will end some day. So lets try not to end it because we were careless and didn't think about our environment.

PHEOC-Paper Airplanes

Problem: What kind of paper airplane design would fly the farthest off of a launcher?
Hypothesis: Nate and I made 7 different paper airplane designs and did some research on each. The Champ was a paper airplane that held the world record for flying in the air for the longest time. As we were throwing the paper airplanes around the room, we then found out that The Moth flew for a very long distance by throwing it with our hands. The design of the Moth had a non-pointed head, instead it was flat and not as aero-dynamic. That must had some effect on the paper airplane.

Procedure:
Before we could fly the paper airplanes there was another problem. We couldn't use our hands to throw the paper airplanes because the power and force would be different with our hands each time we threw the paper airplanes. So we had to make something that would fling the paper airplanes at the same force and angle. First Nate and I tried to use a fan and a ramp but the plane would just fall out of track. Next we tried to make another ramp that would build up speed then launch the paper airplane.  After our failed attempts we found a video that used a rubber band and a pen cap to fly the paper airplane. We used a similar design, but instead of a couple of boards as our base we used card board. After a couple of test tries and improvements it worked like a charm. The launcher was made of cardboard, hooks, and rubber bands. We used the stairwell upstairs to fly all the paper airplanes because there were few distractions and it was fairly quiet. We stuck Post-It Notes to mark a meter. There were 7 Post-It Notes placed which equalled 7 meters. The launcher was placed straight and in the middle of the stair case. Each plane was attached with the same kind pen cap to fly the paper airplanes equally. The paper airplanes were put onto a hook which launched the paper airplanes off the platform and into the air. There were a few errors on the tests. For example, the pen cap would get stuck on the hook and the paper airplane would not go anywhere. Also, the paper airplane would fall off the edge of the railing on the stairs. There were no further interruptions or errors during the launch. Each paper airplane would go one at a time and taking three different test flies. The results would be averaged up and were all measured in centimeters. Some of the tests were recorded by computer to show our results on how we did this procedure.

Observation:
When we launched the first airplane (The Moth) it had a distance we knew would happen. It wasn’t that far but it may have been because of there was no point on the plane. The next two tests were The Arrow and The Dart had an enormous increase in distance unlike the first test. These planes had a pointed tip and were very arrow dynamic. The Champ had held the world record for longest time in the air, but not off of our launcher. It had the same distance as The Moth with about 350 cm. Then we tried something different, we made another Champ paper airplane, but instead we didn’t add wing folds to the sides. It didn’t work at all. The Champ only went about 100 cm. The next plane was the Kite. It had an average distance of about 500 cm. The last thing plane we did was The Kite without tape on the back of it. Its distance was about 330 cm. We cannot totally conclude that The Dart is the best paper airplane, but according to the launcher it is.

Conclusion:
When Nate and I wanted to know which paper airplane would fly the farthest, we had to make a launcher to fly the paper airplanes with the same power, and force to get the closest result to the right answer. We thought The Moth would have gone the farthest because it would take off in one’s hand. I guess we were wrong with our hypothesis. Off of the launcher, The Dart went the farthest with an average of 649.3 centimeters. We think this plane went very far because when it was beginning to fly, the point at the start of the plane cut though the air and kept on flying. We can’t conclude what plane will fly the farthest, but with all the planes we tried, The Dart flew the farthest off of our launcher.

Many people think they're irresistible, others say they could be considered candy, but I call them waffles. Waffles are made of a batter or dough of, milk, eggs, and a little bit of salt. Here are the directions on how to make a perfect waffle. 

  • New waffle irons might not need spray. See that instruction manual? Give it the once-over!
  • Take it easy! Don’t mix the batter too quickly. Use a slow, even tempo to get the right consistency!
  • No peeking! We know you’re hungry. But your patience will be reward. Don’t lift the lid too early or you will let out the steam. Wait until you see the light!
  • Waste not, want not. Waffles are easy to freeze and reheat. So cook up more than you need so you can pop them into the toaster to warm and crisp them up.

The man who made the first waffle was named Cornelius Swartwout, and he didn't even like waffles. Now, there are many kinds of waffles. The most common waffle is the United States waffle or the Belgium waffle, but waffles can come from all different types of countries. Each country has the same base of the waffle, but will all have a different kind of secret seasoning or ingredient added to the waffle because of the countries culture. Most toppings that are put on a waffle include chocolate or maple syrup, fruit, butter, and berries. This is how the first waffle came out. 
13th Century. The oublie becomes the waffle in the 1200s, when a craftsman has the idea of forging some cooking plates or “irons” that reproduce the characteristic pattern of honeycombs. The word gaufre, from the Old French for waffle (wafla), first appears in print at this time. Wafla means “a piece of honeybee hive.” Other early waffle irons designs include landscapes, coats of arms and religious symbols. The waffle can come in many different sizes and types too. Waffles were also made into fries called Waffle Fries. And chefs have also made mini waffles that you dip into syrup, instead of pouring syrup onto them. There are different kinds of waffles too. Buttermilk waffles are the most common kind of waffle. Otherwise there is whole wheat, berry, or chocolate chips stuffed inside the waffle. They've also made waffle sandwiches, with eggs and bacon in the middle. Now they make waffles into so many kinds of shapes and sizes. The most common shape is the circle. Some restaurants will serve waffles in star, heart , and maybe even Mickey Mouse shape with a cherry and a whipped cream head. 


Did you know waffles are so important that they have their very own holiday. It's celebrated for the first waffle iron patent by Cornelius Swartwout from 1869. It is on August 24 and is known as Waffle Day! 


          Did you know the waffle iron wasn't just used making waffles, it was also used to make the bottom of Nike shoes back in the day before they got super popular.It's about a piece of running shoe history unveiled this week at Nike corporate headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. As big as Nike is today, the massive athletic equipment company had very modest beginnings. Founder Phil Knight sold shoes out of the back of his car. An art student designed the signature swoosh. And the first waffle tread shoes were actually made with a waffle iron. And 40 years later, that waffle iron has reappeared. But the waffle iron can make more than shoes and waffles, it can also cook all sorts of other foods. It can cook hash browns, left over pizza, French toast, chicken, and even bacon strips. So they can make more than just waffles right.
